Tijdens een excursie in December georganiseerd door Landschap had ik het genoegen kennis te maken met één van de meest iconische dieren van Europa, de Wisent of Europese Bizon.
Bij de Bizon denk je in eerste instantie misschien aan zijn Amerikaanse soortgenoot uit de heldenverhalen met cowboys en indianen. Deze helden hebben het voor elkaar gekregen deze oer-runderen waarvan er ooit miljoenen rondliepen bijna systematisch uit te roeien. Ze werden niet alleen bejaagd voor hun huid en vlees maar werden door boeren gezien als voedselconcurrent van hun koeien. Ook het 'conflict' tussen blanken en indianen speelde een rol. In 1875 werd er in het Amerikaanse congres gepleit voor volledige uitroeiing om de de indianen te dwingen hun nomadische bestaan op te geven. De indianen zelf konden er ook wat van. In de jaren 30 van de 19e eeuw werden op de zuidelijke prairie ca. 280.000 Bizons per jaar gedood. Er waren zelfs speciale Bizon-jachttreinen van waaruit op de kuddes geschoten kon worden. In 1884 waren ze zo goed als uitgeroeid. Nu leven er nog zo'n 30.000 in het wild.

The 'heroes' in these stories have almost managed to systematically hunt these animals, which once roamed in the millions, to extinction. They weren't just killed for meat and hide but were also seen as food competitors by farmers to their cattle. The conflict between White men and Indians also played a role. In 1875 the American congress pleaded for full extinction of the Bison to force the Indians to give up their nomadic existence. The Indians themselves are also to blame. In the 30's of the 19th century on the southern prairie 280.000 Bison a year were killed. There even were special Bison hunting trains off which hunters could shoot at the herds. In 1884 the were almost extinct. Now there are some 30.000 in the wild.

Als je nu denkt dat onze Europese 'beschaving' verstandiger te werk zou gaan heb je het mis. De Europese Bizon of Wisent was er begin vorige eeuw nog veel slechter aan toe.

| De mannetjes zijn imposant. tot bijna 2 meter hoog en ca 900 kg. Toch zijn het vriendelijke reuzen. Zolang ze zich niet bedreigd voelen en je op gepaste afstand blijft - Males are very impressive. Door jacht, stroperij en verdwijnen van leefgebied is hij in 1921 in het wild uitgestorven. Terug gefokt uit een handjevol overgebleven dieren in gevangenschap zijn er nu weer ca.4200, waarvan er ongeveer 2800 in het beschermde wildreservaten leven. Ze zijn dus net zo zeldzaam als de Tijger!!!

By hunting, poaching and disappearance of habitat, the European Bison went extinct in the wild in 1921. From a handful of captive animals they were bread back to about 4200, of which about 2800 live in the wild in National Parks. That means they are as rare as the Tiger!!!

In het Kraansvlak nabij de Kennemerduinen in een voor publiek afgesloten natuurgebied van PWN zijn in 2007 de eerste 3 Wisenten uit Polen losgelaten tbv wetenschappelijk onderzoek. in 2008 volgden er nog eens 3. inmiddels zijn er 8 nakomelingen. Dit is de enige plek in de wereld waar de dieren niet worden bijgevoerd en uit de afgelopen 5 jaar blijkt dat ze zich prima kunnen redden. Ze delen hier hun habitat met andere wilde grazers als Damhert en Ree.

Het onderzoek levert belangrijke informatie op over o.a. eetgedrag en terreingebruik van de dieren, maar ook over interactie met ander dieren en mensen. Hier is maar weinig over bekend en er doen veel indianenverhalen de ronde over hoe gevaarlijk en agressief ze zouden zijn. Het tegendeel blijkt waar, ze zijn behoorlijk mensenschuw.

Important information was gathered from the research regarding use of terrain and interaction with other animals and humans. Little is known about that and a lot of wild stories exist about their aggression towards humans. Quite the opposite turned out to be the case, they are very shy of people.

Een close encounter met een boze Wisent lijkt me ook niet echt wenselijk, want die kleine die hier nog speels door het zand rolt is over een paar jaar bijna 2 meter hoog en 600 tot 1000 kilo zwaar... Bijzonder dat ze nu weer in Nederland te zien zijn buiten de dierentuin.

A close encounter with a an angry Bison is not advisable feat because the little one rolling in the sand here will be almost 2 meters tall and almost a 1000 kg in two years time... Amazing you can now see them outside of the zoo in the Netherlands.

Een week later had ik het voorrecht een foto excursie te maken op een tijdstip vroeg in de ochtend met beter licht en, met geluk, op een mooiere lokatie.
De wisenten worden gevolgd middels een GPS zender en omdat ze behoorlijke afstanden kunnen afleggen is het afwachten waar ze zich bevinden op het moment dat je ze gaat opzoeken.

A week later I had the privilege of making an photo excursion at sunrise with much better light and, with luck, in a better location. The Bisons whereabouts are monitored by GPS and because they can travel long distances, you never know where they'll be the next day.

Vreemd genoeg was er géén animo voor de excursie(s) ondanks het feit dat we een week eerder met maar liefst 30 enthousiaste bezoekers waren. De weersvoorspellingen waren niet best, dat was misschien een verklaring, maar niet getreurd natuurlijk, hoe minder zielen hoe meer vreugd! En de goden waren ons goed gezind! Bij zonsopkomst weken de grauwe wolken en baadden de duinen in mooi zacht licht. Alle tijd om onder deskundige begeleiding van Boswachter Ruud Maaskant prachtige foto's te maken!

To my surprise there wasn't any interest in these photo excursions that day, despite the fact that there were 30 enthusiastic visitors last week. The weather wasn't going to be very promising but this was a great opportunity, the less people the better. And we were very lucky. At sunset the clouds disappeared like magic and the dunes were bathing in beautiful warm light. And we had all the time to make great photo's guided by Ranger Ruud Maaskant.

| De Wisent is een stuk slanker gebouwd dan zijn Amerikaanse verwant, waardoor hij zich makkelijker door bos en struikgewas kan bewegen. Niettemin imposant als hij zo met zijn hoge rug boven het duin verschijnt - The European Bison is built slimmer than its American counterpart, so it can easily move throught thick bushes and forest. De dieren bleken ook een stuk minder schuw dan tijdens de excursie. Die grote groep mensen ervaren ze toch meer als bedreigend. Ze waren zelfs zo nieuwsgierig dat we meerdere malen onze spullen op moesten pakken en ons terug moesten trekken.

Alhoewel ze misschien minder imposant zijn dan hun Amerikaanse verwanten maken ze toch een onuitwisbare indruk. Ze zijn echt groot en prachtige "oer" beesten. Heel wat anders dan een Schotse Hooglander die ondanks hun groter hoorns heel wat minder ontzag inboezemen.

They may be less impressive than their American relatives they left a deep impression on me. They're really big and beautifully primal beasts. Quite something else than Scottisch Higlanders that despite their larger horns are less awe-inspiring.

Een bijzonder project in ons kleine landje dat veel nieuwe wetenschappelijke informatie oplevert, veel aandacht krijgt in de rest van de wereld en maar weer eens aantoont dat we het tij gelukkig nog hebben kunnen keren voor deze soort, op het nippertje... Wellicht dat over enkele jaren de Bizon weer een vertrouwd beeld wordt in het Nederlandse en Europese landschap, dat zou mooi zijn...

A special project in our small country that resulted in a lot of new scientific findings, gets a lot of attention from the rest of the world and shows that we were able to save this species, but only 'just'. Hopefully the European Bison will roam freely again in the rest of the country and Europe in a couple of years
