Vanavond is het weer eens veel te druk bij de Radijs akker, dus ik besluit verderop op een rustigere stek te gaan kijken. Reeën blijven meestal in hun territorium en die zijn er genoeg hier op de hei. Het duurt dan ook niet lang voordat ik deze bok tegenkom. Ik hoef alleen maar geduldig te wachten tot hij in het licht stapt...

Tonight it's way to busy at the Raddish field so I decide to move on to a quieter spot. Roe Deer tend to stay in their territory and there's plenty more of them around here. And it doesn't take long for me to find this buck. All I have to do is wait for it to step into the light...

De Heide zou nu mooi paars moeten kleuren, en ook al dat doet ie dat op veel plaatsen wel, Hier is dat helaas niet het geval. Grote delen zijn flink aangetast door het Heidehaantje, een kleine kever waarvan de larven de planten aanvreten waardoor ze dor worden en niet tot bloei komen. De enige oplossing schijnt te zijn: bestrijding met zware chemicaliën, afbranden, of maaien van de heide. De Eerste twee zijn geen optie, dus hier is de laatste methode toegepast, voor het tweede achtereenvolgende jaar... vraag me af of dat helpt want het is er niet beter op geworden. Her en der bloeit nog wel wat Dophei met zijn subtiele roze bloemetjes. ook mooi, vooral als decor voor deze Reebok in het warme avondlicht...

The Heather should be coloring purple around this time of year, and it does in many places but not around hear. It has been heavily affected by the Heather Beetle of which the larvae feed on the plants and prevents them from blooming. The only sollution seems to be: treatment with chemicals, burning it down, or mowing. The first two are not an option so they mowed large areas for the second year now... I wonder if this helps because it seems even worse this year. In some spots the Cross-leaved Heath which seems unaffected, is still blooming with its more subtle pink flowers. A nice decor for this Roebuck in the warm evening light...

Wat een bloeiend paars tapijt had moeten zijn is nu dankzij de Heidehaantjes een roest-rood tapijt geworden. Niettemin een prachtig gezicht in de avondzon.

What should have been a flowering purple carpet is now turned to a rusty red carpet, thanks to the Heather Beetle. Nevertheless a beautiful sight in the warm evening light.
