Vanavond was het beter op de hei, tenminste voor mij. Doordat het een stuk frisser was bleven de grote mensenmassa's thuis voor de buis en dat betekent meer rust, meer dieren. Eerst zag ik dit Ree op een vreemde plaats verschijnen op een heuveltje vanuit het lager gelegen bos. Het hek op de voorgrond is storend, maar ik vond het grappig te zien dat het dier de moeilijke, korte route naar boven verkoos boven een stukje omlopen naar waar het minder stijl is.

Tonight it was much better in the heathlands, at least for me. Lower temperatures means more people stay indoors at their tv sets and that means more quiet, more animals. First I see a Roe Deer appearing from a strange spot out of the forest below on a steep hill. The fence in the foreground is distracting but I found it funny to see it take the less easy shortcut instead of the easier way up a bit further.

De Zwarte Roodstaart die ik hoopte te zien liet zich alleen maar van veraf horen. en deze Tapuiten kwamen ook niet zo dichtbij als ik gehoopt had, dus na een tijdje ging ik verder naar een andere lokatie.

The Black Redstart I was hoping to See only made itself heard from a distance, but stayed well out of sight. These Northern Wheatears didn't come as close as I hoped either. So after a while I went on to a different spot.

Als het rustig is laten de Reeën zich een stuk makkelijker benaderen. Deze bok was met een jong van vorig jaar op stap. Meestal zie je ze met de moeder samen.

When it's quiet Roe Deer are much easier to approach. This Buck was accompanying a Juvenile from last year. Mostly you'll see them with their mothers.

Even later rent het kalf naar de ander kant van het pad. Ook daar geen moeder maar een andere bok mooi in het tegenlicht.

A bit later the calf runs to the other side of the path. There was no mother in sight here either, just a different buck nicely backlit.

Deze Reegeit stond rustig pal langs het fietspad te grazen.

This Doe was grazing right next to the cycle path.

Het licht was prachtig maar een paar dagen geleden was deze foto mooier met de nog bloeiende Krentenboompjes.

The light was great, but a few days earlier this photo looked better with the Shadbush still blossoming.

Mooie plaatjes schieten is vaak al leuk genoeg, maar de uitdaging zit hem in het zoeken naar bijzondere momenten. De laagstaande zon is daar een mooi hulpmiddel bij en geeft een heel andere, meer spannende kijk op dingen. De rode vlek op de voorgrond wordt veroorzaakt door de zon die nog net in de lens schijnt.

It's fun to shoot nice pictures but the challenge is in finding special moments. The low evening sun can be a great help and makes you see things differently ands ads some tension to the shot. The red spot in the foreground is caused by the sun flaring in the lens.

Ook is het slim om tot na zonsondergang te blijven, en als je dan geluk hebt kun je een foto maken zoals je die al lang in je hoofd had, die net even anders is. Ik kom hier vaak, en er lopen hier veel reeën rond, maar nooit op het juiste moment op de juiste plek om deze foto's te kunnen maken. Bijna drie kwartier na zonsondergang, de lucht had nog net genoeg kleur, en nu liep er een Reebok precies op één van de schaarse heuveltjes die de horizon aan het zicht onttrekken. weinig licht, dus lange sluitertijden. Maar daar zeul je dat zware statief de hele dag voor mee :-) Perfect!

It also pays off to stay until after sunset, and if you're lucky you can make that photo you imagined making one day that is just a little different. I come here a lot, and there's always a lot of Roe Deer to be found, but just never in the right place at the right time to make these shots I made today. Almost three quarters of an hour after sunset, whit just enough reddish sunlight to reflect of the sky, this Roe Deer buck was stending exactly on one of the scarce hills in this area that covers the horizon from my view. Low light means slow shutter speeds but that's why you haul along that heavy tripod all day :-) Perfect!
