Als ik 's ochtends de polder in fiets is het zicht maar een meter of vijftig vanwege de dichte mist. De werkzaamheden aan de dijk zijn net begonnen en ik tref een groep nerveuze Brandganzen aan die telkens opschrikken en rondjes vliegen bij elk hard geluid van de onzichtbare machines en voertuigen. Dit levert mooie dromerige plaatjes op.

When I cycle into the field this morning, visibility is only about fifty meters due to the dense fog. Work on the dike is just getting started and I see a flock of nervous Barnacle Geese that are startled time and again by each loud noise from the invisible machinery and vehicles, and fly in circles consequently. This provides some beautiful dreamy pictures.

Na een half uur is de mist grotendeels opgetrokken en komen de vogels weer tot rust. De mist en opkomende zon zorgen voor een prachtige oranje gloed in het riet.

In half an hour the fog has almost vanished and the birds calm down. The mist and rising sun create a nice orange glow in the reeds.

Een mannetje Roodborsttapuit zingt uit volle borst vanaf de hoogste boom in de omtrek. Helaas voor hem is er nog geen vrouwtje te bekennen.

There's beautiful light at the forest edge.
Ik loop een beetje heen en weer langs de bosrand en probeer de Havik te spotten die zich af en toe laat horen, maar hij laat zich niet zien en zit ook niet echt dichtbij. Nadat ik een tijdje met iemand heb staan praten hoor ik hem plotseling weer dichterbij en ik besluit terug te lopen en nog een poging te wagen. Na ongeveer een half uur krijg ik hem voor de lens. Prachtig!

I walk along the forest and try to spot the Goshawk that I can hear from time to time but I can't see it and it doesn't sound like it is close. After talking for a while with someone, I suddenly hear it again, a lot clearer this time, and I decide to walk back and have another try. After about half an hour I get the bird in front of the lens. Magnificent!

Voldaan keer ik terug naar huis, tijd voor koffie. Onderweg fotografeer ik nog een mannetje Torevalk die letterlijk schijt aan me heeft, maar mijn dag kan al niet meer stuk :-)

's Avonds ben ik nog even terug gegaan voor de Klapekster die zich vanochtend alleen van heel af weg zien. Deze prachtige 'rover' met zijn bandietenmasker broedt helaas sinds een jaar of tien niet meer in Nederland maar overwintert hier nog wel. Vandaag was het een mooie dag om noordwaarts naar zijn broedgebied te vliegen, maar ik had geluk, hij was er nog. Meestal vliegt hij weg zodra je in de buurt komt maar nu zat hij met zijn rug naar me toe en kon ik dichterbij sluipen en wachten tot hij in het zicht ging zitten. Hij zag me pas toen hij recht op me af wegvloog.
Na vandaag heb ik hem niet meer gezien...

In the evening I went back to check on the Northern Shrike which this morning only showed itself at a large distance. This beautiful predator with its bandit mask unfortunately doesn't breed in the Netherlands anymore since about ten years, but they still overwinter here. Today was a beautiful day for the bird to fly north to its breeding grounds but I was lucky, it was still there. Usually it flies away as soon as you get close but now it sat with its back turned towards me and I was able to sneak closer and wait until it sat down in my view. It only saw me as it flew away straight at me.
After today I haven't seen it anymore ...

Ik besluit nog even tegen het hek te gaan zitten wachten op de Reeën en te genieten van het mooie licht, als plotseling een havik op nog geen 3 meter voor mijn neus langs schiet vlak boven de grond! Daar zit je dan met je telelens. Voordat ik kon 'schieten' was hij al bij de bosrand. Slechte foto :-)

I decide to sit against the fence and wait for more Roe Deer while enjoying the beautiful light, as I suddenly see the Goshawk fly by right in front of me only a few meters above the ground! My tele-lens was way to long to capture this moment even at 100mm. Before I could even 'shoot' it was already at the forest edge. Bad photo :-)

Na zonsondergang kwamen ze tevoorschijn. Helaas niet heel dichtbij en bij slecht licht, maar toch een mooi schouwspel die twee bokken achter elkaar aan te zien rennen.

After sunset they appeared. Not very close and in bad light, but still is was a nice spectacle to watch these two bucks play and chase each other.
