Niet alleen op de menselijke woningmarkt is kraken een begrip.
Die zijn liever lui dan moe en hebben besloten een havikshorst in aanbouw te belagen. Ik had het geluk getuige te zijn van de overname. Alhoewel, het is een paar weken later als ik dit schrijf en de Haviken blijken niet zo snel opgeven als sommigen misschien dachten.
Nijlganzen staan te boek als agressief, in elk geval onder vele vogelaars en fotografen die ik gesproken heb. En die hebben er natuurlijk verstand van ;-)
Maar het is bij meerdere soorten niet ongewoon dat er nesten of holen overgenomen worden. De soort komt van oorsprong uit Egypte (langs de Nijl) en Afrika en heeft zich sinds de jaren zestig weten te vestigen en voortplanten uit enkele ontsnapte exemplaren. En ondanks de negatieve geluiden die je hoort, blijken ze maar in geringe mate te concurreren met inheemse soorten.

Goshawks also have to deal with squatters at times. In this case, a pair of Egyptian Geese. They are rather lazy birds and decided to squat a Goshawks nest under construction instead of building their own. I was lucky to witness the hostile takeover. Although, it is a few weeks later as I write this and the Goshawks didn't give up ass easily as some might have thought.
Egyptian Geese are known to be aggressive, at least among many birders and photographers whom I have spoken. And they of course can know this ;-)
But it is not uncommon for several species that are nests or dens are taken from other species. This species is native to Egypt (along the Nile) and Africa and has been able to establish itself from escapees since the sixties and despite the negative sounds you hear, they turn out to compete little with native species.

Ik ben inmiddels twee keer terug geweest en de Haviken bouwden nog steeds aan het nest terwijl de ganzen in de buurt rondjes vlogen. De laatste keer heb ik alleen Haviken gezien, maar niet op het nest. Er wordt dus (nog) niet gebroed.

I've been back twice now and the Goshawks were still building the nest while the geese were flying around in circles. The last time I saw only the Goshawks, but not on the nest. Thus, they are not (yet) breeding...

René Smits had er al eerder over bericht op zijn blog kwam ik later achter, dus de strijd is nog niet gestreden.... Na een keer of zes aanvallen gaven de Haviken op en moest ik er vandoor, ik was al uren op pad en het werd tijd voor koffie :-) Wat fantastisch om dit mee te maken en te kunnen vastleggen!

Later I found out that René Smits had written about this earlier (in dutch), so the battle hasn't been fought yet... After about 6 attacks the Goshawks gave up and I had to go home, I was out and about for hours and dying for coffee :-) What a great experience this was!
