Klein grut...Small fry...

Today I had another attempt at photographing some 'small fry' at the forest edge. Especially Pied Flycatchers and Common Redstarts are abundant again, but to get them in front of the lens is not that easy. This Willow Warbler stayed put long enough to get a good shot. They look very much like Chiffchaffs and are better to be distinguished from their song. Listen to the Willow Warbler. Listen to the Chiffchaff.

Great Spotted Woodpeckers are also busy. A striking bird with its black, white and red parts. Only the male (photo) has a red sport on the back of its head. The drumming sound on trees is clearly audible from a distance. they do this to mark their territory and bond with the opposite sex. Their call is also easy to recognize. They hack their nests preferably in soft trees like Birches. To not get a headache their brains are embedded in a special kind of shock absorbers.

Prachtig!

The 'star' of today was again my favorite Roe Deer buck. While I was sitting quietly on the ground  waiting for the Ring Ouzels to appear, suddenly I noticed something move in the corner of my eye. The buck had approached me stealthily from behind and was checking out the best spot to get through the barbed wire fence just a couple of meters beside me. He looked up once and stared me right in the eye before going along its way to step through the fence a few meters further completely at ease. Clearly it must trust me enough to get this close. What a great experience. Beautiful!
